Pray, Watch, and Wait
"Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful." - Colossians 4:2 NIV In Isaiah chapter 56, God, speaking through the prophet declares that His house is to be called a "house of prayer." Later in the gospels, as Jesus is driving out the money changers from the temple, He quotes the very same words. And finally, in today's verse, we read Paul's instruction to a life of devoted prayer. Putting these three together, it seems quite clear that God wants us to be marked by prayer.
However, what stands out to me today are the words that follow Paul's instruction, "devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful."
Like everything in our relationship with God, faith is required, and prayer is no different. Not just faith to pray to God, but also the faith to watch for His answer, as well as to give thanks while we wait. Paul's instruction to the Colossians is to be a people who pray, watch and wait.
We seem to struggle here. Sure we have a measure of faith to pray, but do we have faith to expect? Do we have faith to watch for God to move? Do we thank Him in the waiting? Do we thank Him when He answers? Today, challenge yourself not just to pray for the people and circumstances around you, but also to watch as God answers those prayers, being thankful even before the answer is received! Questions to Consider: Could there be things that you've prayed for that God has already answered but you miss them because you weren't watching? Do you pray and watch for God but forget to be thankful while you wait?
