From Love, Not For It
"Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience." - Colossians 3:12 NIV My wife and I have a simple rule in our house; listen and obey. Whenever things are getting just a little out of hand, all we have to do is ask our girls, "what's the rule ladies?" Without fail each will respond "listen and obey." As parents, we feel it's our responsibility to train our daughters to grow up as respectable, faithful and well-mannered young women. This starts of course with Godly principles, but they must also be taught FROM a place of great love. Our daughter's know that listening and being obedient are things we expect from them, but specifically because we already love them. As I read our scripture today I realized Paul was communicating the exact same idea. He starts by telling the people of Colossae that they are God's chosen, holy, and dearly loved. In light of this, he goes on to say that they should then be compassionate, kind, humble, gentle and patient. Make sure you catch that order! It's FROM a place of love, a place of absolute safety that these Christians are called to live according to God's ways. Fortunately, the same is true for you and me! Absolutely nothing makes obedience easier and more enjoyable than knowing we're obeying FROM a place of love, not in order to gain it. Questions to Consider: What are some Bible passages that remind you of God's great love for you? What actions have you taken in light of God's great love? Is your attitude better when you obey out FROM the knowledge that you are truly loved?
