Keeping Our Balance
"Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory." - Colossians 3:2-4 NIV When I was a kid I always enjoyed walking across parking blocks and other narrow objects. I don't know why, but I liked trying to keep my balance.
I can recall after failing several times my dad telling me, it was my looking down that kept causing me to fall. The remedy he said, was simply to look up. This seemed rather counter-intuitive but I gave it a shot. And low and behold, Dad was right, I maintained my balance the very next time.
This childhood lesson (though trivial) serves well as an illustration of what we've read in today's passage. Only when we set our minds to the things above when we look up, are we able to truly keep balance in this life.
If each of us will simply look up, we'll see that we've died to earthly things, that we've been made alive and hidden in Christ, and as a result, we can conquer absolutely anything we face.
Today I want to challenge you, no matter what comes into your mind, to focus your attention on the things above. Write down the times you were tempted to look at earthly things, but also record the successes you attained when you chose to look up to Jesus. Questions to Consider: What Earthly things do you focus on too much? How would taking your mind off those things and placing it on God change your actions, your attitudes, etc?
